Let me start by saying that I’m guilty of what I’m about to write. However, in the last few years and months, God has been convicting me of my motives. Since the epic rise of social media, the serving and volunteer work of churches, non-profits and businesses has been blasted across our feeds. It’s not a new concept, but it’s in our faces now more than ever. There are livestreams and Instagram posts of churches serving public schools and doing neighborhood prayer walks. Businesses are making commercials to show their community service with their logo watermarked in the corner of the screen throughout. Non-profits are highlighting the clients they’re helping while flashing statistics that conclude with their giving link or website.
There is so much here to think about. Our culture is built on followers, likes, and reposts to the point where you don't need social media to be formed by the influence influenza. Twitter is the modern equivalent of the pharisees's Trumpet; in what other ways, aside from social media, am I drawing attention to my actions? This post was great motivation for introspection, Kent. Thanks!
The quiet, nonself-seeking modeling of the Jesus life is powerful. Reminds me of the best worship leaders. They don’t need to coax participation or cheerlead for a better sound or performance, they just worship. And others follow and join in. We all long for worth and value, and sooner or later we recognize that it’s not found in accumulating a kingdom for ourselves, but in answering the needs of others. And when we see someone serving without needing accolades, it’s also attractive. Btw, I don’t see you as drawing attention to yourself in how you lead, but drawing attention to Jesus. That’s one of the reasons I am open to follow your lead
